Elf on a shelf
This afternoon we were all set a challenge of making a shelf for an elf. The shelf had have a seat for the elf and be as tall as possible whilst still standing. The children had to work as a team to share ideas, it took a lot of resilience and perseverance as they kept falling over, some had to rethink their strategies on more than one occasion.
The winning team was Anais, Tye and Afrah their shelf was 1cm taller than the team in second place.
A mischievous elf visits Oak class....
This week an elf has come to stay with us to make sure everyone is behaving themselves at school, he is reporting back to Father Christmas every night! The children came up with some different names for him, we then had a vote. Jingle was the winning name. However, Jingle is a very cheeky elf and has caused mayhem in the classroom, so far he has tipped icing sugar all over our carpet to make snow angels, moved everyone to red and has wrapped all his friends in toilet roll! The children have been writing diaries to keep track of his misdemeanours.
Have a look below to see what the elf has been up to and the children's elf diaries.
Good to be green treat
This half term (and last half term) everyone in Oak class took part in the good to be green treat. We watched the popcorn popping and then watched a Christmas DVD back in the classroom.
Well done Oak class!!!
Emailing Father Christmas
We have emailed Father Christmas today, we sent him our wish lists and asked whether we are on the good or the bad list! Although Father Christmas is very busy he emailed back very quickly and the children were impressed with how much he knew about them!!
We have been exploring constellations and trying to learn the different names. Some are very tricky to say and others we recognised!
After we had looked at the different constellations we recreated them with matchsticks and marshmallows. Can you find the constellation we've made?
Last week we made rockets, we thought about all the key things a rocket might need such as wings, pointed nose etc. The children then made their rockets complete with paper fire!
Today we launched our rockets to investigate whose rocket would travel the furthest and have the best chance of going into space. With a little help from the wind our rockets travelled some impressive distances...
Today in topic we tried space food! We tasted strawberries and ice-cream. However, the ice-cream was not cold and looked nothing like it should. We thought it looked like rocks and chalk! Some of us found it delicious and some of us found it disgusting. Ask your child what they thought of the space food. We looked at why space food has all the water taken out and why this is important for astronauts.
Take a look at our tasting afternoon below
Delicious chocolate sparklers
This week in topic we are learning about Guy Fawkes and how this links to Bonfire night. As part of our learning, we made chocolate sparklers with popping candy and sprinkles.
This week in maths we are learning multiplication and division facts for the 10 x table. We ALL know our 10 x table and most of us know the division facts too!
